Reverend Joel Gibson has been appointed Director of the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies’ newly merged Member and Faith Based Services Department, effective January 31, 2011.

“We’ve had 25 new members join FPWA in the past two years, 18 of which are churches and faith-based organizations,” said Fatima Goldman, Executive Director/CEO. “Given the fact that a growing portion of our membership is faith-based, and that our Member Services and Faith-Based Services departments provide very similar programs and services to different constituencies, it makes sense to merge the two departments.”

Gibson will replace Bonda Lee-Cunningham, Director of Member Services who is retiring at the end of January.

“Although we’ll certainly miss Bonda both personally and professionally, I have full confidence that Joel Gibson will do a terrific job as our new Director of Member and Faith-Based Services,” said Fatima Goldman, Executive Director / CEO.

Reverend Gibson began as Director of Faith-Based Services in 2007.  During the last three years he has launched several new initiatives to help strengthen the ability of churches and faith-based organizations to provide social services for their parishioners and community residents, including clergy trainings and the development of referral networks in underserved communities in New York City.

“Bonda and I have been working closely to make this a smooth transition, and I’m very much looking forward to working with our membership and the faith community in this new capacity,” said Gibson.

Gibson previously served as Sub Dean (Chief Operating Officer) at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine and Mission Officer at Trinity Episcopal Church, Wall Street. More recently, he has held the positions of Dean of St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral, Founding Executive Director and Board President of Spiritual Opportunities for Life and Executive Director of The Institute for New Americans, all of which are in Minneapolis. Reverend Gibson holds a Masters in Divinity and a Bachelors degree in Business Administration.
