Lawrence Carter-Long has been named Executive Director of the Disabilities Network of New York. Carter-Long first came to the Disabilities Network as Network Coordinator in 2005. A seasoned community organizer and advocate, he is widely recognized for his expertise in communications and media.

As a spokesperson on a wide variety of issues ranging from media portrayal of disability, self determination, medical ethics and important quality of life issues like employment, transportation and housing, Lawrence has been featured in dozens of national media outlets. He is an advisor to the I.AM.PWD campaign launched in January 2009 by the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and Actor’s Equity to increase opportunities and visibility for performers with disabilities throughout the entertainment industry.

A longtime advocate and supporter of the arts, Carter-Long is the founder and Curator of the Disabilities Network groundbreaking project, the “disTHIS! Film Series: disability through a whole new lens”. As a performer, Lawrence can currently be seen as a part of “GIMP” with Heidi Latsky Dance.

Prior to coming to the Disabilities Network, Lawrence was the Communications Director for the Animal Protection Institute from 1998-2002. He authored regular columns for the Animals’s Agenda magazine from 1996-1999 and was later a Contributing Editor for SATYA magazine.

In August 2004, Lawrence completed the sixth annual SPIN Academy, sponsored by the SPIN Project, an intensive five day training program devoted to specific skills-building in framing, message creation, targeting, developing relationships with reporters and overall honing of advanced communications skills
