SCO’s McMahon Announces Plans to Retire PDF Print E-mail

Robert J. McMahon, Executive Director of SCO Family of Services has announced that he will retire pending the outcome of a successful search for his successor.  McMahon led SCO Family of Services for 37 years as it moved from a small Long Island based agency with a budget just under 1 million dollars to one of the largest social services providers in the New York area, serving more than 40,000 annually at 122 locations throughout New York City and Long Island.

“As retirement approaches, I think about all we have been able to accomplish at SCO thanks to the leadership of a mission driven Board of Directors and a passionate and committed staff,” said McMahon. “Over the years, joining with The Ottilie Home, Madonna Heights and most recently Family Dynamics, our agency has been able to take the lead in so many areas while always keeping our focus on ‘the family as the unit of attention.’

“We helped lay the ground work for preventive services as they exist today,” McMahon continued. “Under the leadership of Sister Mary Paul and Sister Geraldine, our work at the Center for Family Life became the gold standard for preventive/community-based services.  We then took the model to Queens, Central Brooklyn and now Brownsville.   We launched Therapeutic Foster Care, allowing children with severe mental health issues to live with families rather than in institutions.  We started New York State’s federally funded programs for youngsters with developmental disabilities and waiver programs that keep children and adults with these issues in their own homes. We have grown tremendously in the area of homeless services and our services for the most challenging teens across all service systems are effective and well regarded. We continue to innovate including two new special needs schools for youth previously sent out of state, an Early Head Start Center and a Bridges to Health waiver program for children in foster care.”

The Search/Transition Committee of the SCO Board of Directors has organized and retained the firm of Phillips Oppenheim to take the lead in a search for a new Executive Director.  They are also continuing to work with Tom Adams of TransitionGuides as consultant and coach on the transition.
