Arlene Goldsmith, LCSW, Ph.D., Executive Director of New Alternatives for Children, was recently honored with the 2010 National Foster Care Leadership Award. The award was presented by The Rowell Foster Children’s Positive Plan. The May 15th event – “Who Mentored You to This Moment: A Celebration of Mentors and Mentees Who Make a Difference” – was co-sponsored by The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Multicultural Audience Development Initiative and the Annie E. Casey Foundation in recognition of Mentorship and National Foster Care Month.

The event also honored Matilda Raffa Cuomo, former First Lady of New York and founder of Mentoring USA/Italia, who received the 2010 Mentoring Award.  Shane Salter, CEO and founder of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) for Children of DC received the 2010 National Advocacy Award.

Goldsmith has headed New Alternatives for Children, which specializes in providing foster care and foster care prevention services for children with special medical needs, since its founding in 1982.  Over the years, NAC has enabled countless children requiring specialized medical services and supports to leave hospitals and be reunited with their own families or to find new families through foster care and adoption.

Started by Emmy-nominated actress Victoria Rowell in 1990, the Rowell Foster Children Positive Plan (RFCPP) is a non-profit charitable organization offering scholarships to help children in foster care thrive through participation in fine arts classes, sports camps, and cultural enrichment activities.
