The Harlem YMCA and The New York Foundling have announced the opening of the first-of-its-kind summer school, “Summer Academy”, which will provide free summer school and day camp for children in the foster care system and those who come from low income families.
Summer Academy will serve 40 students ages 6 to 11 who attend Haven Academy -- a charter school in the Mott Haven section in the Bronx for children in foster care or preventive services as well as children from the surrounding community. The students attending Summer Academy have been identified as needing additional academic support. The five week long program includes reading, writing, math and computer classes from 9am to 12pm followed by Harlem YMCA summer camp activities such as swim lessons, drama, dance, field trips and sports in the afternoon.
“Summer Academy is the perfect combination of focused academic lessons and the typical activities kids love to do in the summer. Without this new program, these kids may not have had the chance to solve what once was a challenging math equation or learn how to swim. We thank the Harlem YMCA for partnering with us in helping our kids achieve academic success while also providing a safe place for them to play and ‘be kids,’” said Carmen Jirau-Rivera, Associate Executive Director of The New York Foundling.
“We are honored to partner with The New York Foundling and Haven Academy on such an exciting project,” said Latoya Jackson, Youth and Family Director at the YMCA of Greater New York. “Without structured programming, children can fall victim to summer learning loss which leads them to fall behind academically. This program will help these children excel academically as well as physically.”
