Services for the UnderServed (SUS) marked 30 years of service to New York and the human services industry on June 3rd at Jazz at Lincoln Center with it’s gala event “Celebrating Independence.” Hosted by Harry Smith, the CBS Early Show anchor, the evening’s program recognized 3 SUS Consumers for their inspirational personal success stories and honored George Biddle, Executive Vice President of the International Rescue Committee (IRC), for his dedication to aiding refugees around the world. The gala closed with a performance from Motown legend Martha Reeves & The Vandellas (see photo) to cap a memorable evening. “We are thrilled with the outstanding support for our event this year. It provides an opportunity to share the wonderful work of SUS with the NYC community,” says Donna Colonna, Chief Executive Officer of SUS. The SUS consumer awards were presented by from Thomas J. McCauley, Vice President, Wachovia Insurance Services, Commissioner Michael F. Hogan, New York State Office of Mental Health; and George R. Steel General Manager & Artistic Director, New York City Opera. The evening began with a premiere of “The SUS List”, a documentary short featuring stories of recovery from SUS consumers in their own words. “These stories of human resilience are the best way to understand more of what SUS contributes to the communities of New York,” Colonna notes. “In these times, SUS recognizes the need to use all tools at their disposal, particularly technology, to share its work in a more public manner and sound the call to action for service to vulnerable New Yorkers working to achieve independent lives.”
