The Long Island Volunteer Hall of Fame formally inducted 13 new members on February 1st at a Ceremony and Reception held at Carlyl on the Green in Bethpage State Park. The new honorees included 12 founders of ten different nonprofit agencies and one lifetime achiever. This year’s inductees are: • John White, Project Challenge • Joysetta and Julius Pearse, Nassau County Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Celebration Committee • Robert Alvey, Garden City Bird Sanctuary; • Sybil Meisel, PAWS (Pioneers for Animal Welfare Society) • Lillian Julien, COPE (Connecting Our Paths Eternally) • Lorraine Pace, Breast Cancer HELP (Healthy Environment for a Living Planet) • Kenneth Batchelor, Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk • Ann and Phil Gribbins, Floral Park Conservation Society Giving Garden • Leonard Sandel, FOSSI (Friends of Senior Services, Inc.) • Nina Eaton, United Cerebral Palsy of Suffolk, and • William Tyree, SCO Family of Services (Lifetime Achievement Award in Volunteerism) Now in its 7th year, the Long Island Volunteer Hall of Fame celebrates the humanitarian spirit by inducting volunteer founders of nonprofit organizations. Their vision, dedication and drive addressed a community need and began a legacy of service to improve the quality of life for Long Islanders. An award for Lifetime Achievement in Volunteerism is also presented to a unique individual who has made a significant impact on the lives of others through a lifetime commitment of active citizenship, community service, and philanthropy.
