The New York Life Foundation has announced a three-year, $360,000 grant to the National College Advising Corps. The grant will help the Advising Corps increase the number of at-risk students applying to college through the use of college advisers in underserved high schools. The funding specifically supports the addition of seven recent college graduates, or “New York Life Advisers,” in New York, Salt Lake City and Dallas who will work full-time in these schools to help students see college as a viable option. The advisers will help students narrow down their choices, complete admissions and financial aid applications, and enroll at schools where they will fit in academically and socially, thus increasing the likelihood that these students will earn a degree. In New York City, the grant will support the work of two Advisers. Christine Rabbitt will work with students at Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School in the Bronx and Wylie Cheung will work at University Neighborhood High School in Manhattan. “We are grateful to the New York Life Foundation for their support, which enables the Advising Corps to inspire thousands of underserved students who are qualified to attend college but who lack the information and support they need to succeed,” said Nicole Hurd, Ph.D., founder and executive director of the Advising Corps. “In fact, nearly 25% of low-income, first-generation college students who score in the top quartile on standardized tests never go to college.” |
