DYCD Lists OST Programs to be Cut PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 04 March 2010 14:43

Lists of 64 Out of School Time (OST) programs to be closed as part of Mayor Bloomberg's program to eliminate the City's budget gap have been released by the Department of Youth and Community Development.

A total of 33 school-year-only OST programs serving 4,110 elementary and middle school youth are being eliminated in "non-priority zip codes".  Services in Queens are being exceptionally hard hit as part of the cuts, with 17 programs accounting for more than half the total citywide cut.  Nine programs are being cut in Brooklyn, along with three in Staten Island, and two each in the Bronx and Manhattan.

A total of 31 OST Middle School Programs will lose their summer components.   Eleven of the programs are in Brooklyn; eight in Manhattan, six in the Bronx, four in Queens and two in Staten Island.

The cuts are intended to save approximately $7.5 million annually.  Affected programs have already begun receiving letters notifying them that they will be closed effective July 1st.

Parent losing after-school program

Commissioner Mullgrav of DYCD in a letter to the editor of the NYTimes boasted of how much the program improved due to Mayor Bloomberg's initiative in Oct 2009. Nice to tell us a big fat lie before elections and then do the opposite afterwards.

I read the link in the post above mine it is very hypoctrical! Like many others we sacrifice a lot to live in a decent school district. Hard enough to be able to afford to live here without adding the cost of after school care. So why is any zip code considered less a priority than others?

I find it quite odd and hypocritical that DYCD issued an RFP yesterday for the an expansion of the OST program while at the same time they are busy slashing and burning 4,000+ working class families across the city.
