On her first day on the job as New York City's School Chancellor, Cathie Black visited schools in each of the city's five boroughs. Her second stop was North Queens Community High School, an SCO Family of Services transfer school run in partnership with the New York City Department of Education. North Queens offers students who have either dropped out or had truancy issues a second chance at earning a high school diploma.
Black visited classrooms speaking with students and teachers. Many students told the chancellor that school had never been a priority until they came to North Queens. Now they want to go to college and pursue careers. As one girl put it, "It feels good to know that you know things and you can have a conversation and sound smart."
