The results are in from the ING New York City Marathon held yesterday. In addition to first place finishers Gebre Gebremariam from Ethiopia and Edna Kiplagat from Kenya in the men’s and women’s division, the big winners were the many charities which sponsored teams as part of a massive online fundraising effort. Overall the marathon reportedly reached its goal of raising $1 million a mile or $26.2 million for charities.
Team for Kids, which raises money for the New York Road Runners youth services programs, won the overall race for contributions with total donations of over $ 4 million posted on the marathon’s central Crowdrise fundraising website. Other major national charities posting big numbers were the American Cancer Society with $1.2 million, the LiveStrong Foundation with $568,135, Michael J. Fox Foundation with $453,807 and Autism Speaks with $453,409.
Local nonprofits generating impressive contribution totals included Sanctuary for Families with $99,970; Harlem Academy, $60,148; Ohel,$35,113; Institute for Community Living, $27,292; Lower East Side Girls Club, $26,362; Groundwork, $25,905; Harlem RBI - $21,956 and YAI, $17,280.
